Even as a European citizen, you must obtain this famous document. It is compulsory if you are staying in Spain for more than 3 months. And as a student in Spain, this is your case.

What do I need the NIE for?
It is used for everything! In Spain, you can't take a step without being asked for your DNI, the Spanish identity card number. It is therefore much more practical (and mandatory) to have this NIE. You are asked for it for any administrative procedure: bank, university, telephone, gas, internet, telephone...
How much time do I have to do it?
Your official deadline is 3 months once you are in Spain. So there is nothing urgent but it takes a little time. The sooner you do it, the better.
The NIE is therefore important and should not be neglected. When you arrive in Spain, you will have many things to do, including studying. But don't let this process drag on. Take charge of your life. And you will finally understand what your Spanish classes were for!
