Studying in Spain: Spanish language certification

How do you go about certifying your Spanish level?

How and when do you prove to the universities that you have the level they require in the admission process in Spain?

There are 3 ways for you to prove your level of Spanish: the DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language), the SIELE (International Service of Evaluation of the Spanish Language), the university exam.

1. The DELE : Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language

• It is the official diploma of the Spanish Ministry of Education that certifies a level of competence and mastery of the Spanish language.
• It has no expiration date.
• The student registers for the level of Spanish he/she has mastered (A1-A2-B1-B2-C1-C2). Find details on the different levels of Spanish on our page "LEVELING UP IN SPANISH".
• The exam consists of two tests, one written and one oral. Each of these tests is divided between comprehension and expression. You can practice with the exams from previous sessions.
• Registration and Review Dates:

• Approved test centers: use this search engine.
• The registration is done in the approved examination center, the price depends on the level (in 2017 it was necessary to count between 93 and 168 euros)
• The results are communicated approximately 3 months after the exam is taken

2. SIELE: International Service for the Evaluation of the Spanish Language

• It is an exam that certifies the level of competence in Spanish.
• All procedures (registration, tests, results, certificate) are done electronically.
• The student does not register on a level (A1-A2-B1-B2-C1-C2), it is the result that determines his level.

• Registration is only online at this link, its 2017 cost is 165 euros.
• The tests include: a reading comprehension test, an auditory comprehension test, a written expression and interaction test and an oral expression and interaction test.
• Results are available approximately 3 weeks after the exam.

3. Certification by the university

If you have been able to pass the SIELE or DELE and can present the certificate or diploma corresponding to the prerequisite required for Spanish by the university for which you are going to implement an admission process, it is BY FAR.

The university will greatly appreciate your efforts and this will be very positive for your admission.

All is not lost if you do not have your SIELE certificate or DELE diploma in Spanish, but you will still need to have a B1 or B2 level to be admitted to the universities.

Admissions processes will begin in January and continue through June for the most part, with the first open house for testing taking place in late February.

This gives you enough time to prepare.
