You will have to choose a health insurance

for your studies in Spain.

FEEDUC has put together a section listing all the administrative formalities you will need to complete if you have decided to study in Spain.

  • Which health insurance to study in Spain?

Before leaving to study in Spain, it is imperative to make sure that you have health insurance. Indeed, the reimbursement of medical expenses abroad is not automatic, and optimal coverage is necessary to cover all types of care. Depending on the student's situation and destination, different health insurance policies exist.

  • What health coverage abroad for students?

To study abroad in a European country such as Spain, it is possible to obtain a free EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). It allows its holder to benefit from health care coverage during his stay in the European Union.

Go to the social security website for more information.

  • Special conditions for students under 20 years old?

Students under 20 years of age can be reimbursed by their parents' health insurance company even when they go abroad to study. To do so, they must meet three conditions:

- attend an institution preparing them for a formal degree;
- provide a certificate of attendance;
- return to France at least once during the academic year.

Urgent medical expenses must nevertheless be paid locally: invoices and proof of payment must be kept in order to be reimbursed by the health insurance fund once in France. However, in countries where health care costs are high, it is common for the French patient to have a significant out-of-pocket expense.

  • Is the social security coverage sufficient?

For the little "everyday ailments" such as a cold, flu or gastroenteritis, you should not have to pay for them if you are treated in the public health centers in Spain.

However, the health coverage provided by the EHIC will not always be sufficient (specialist consultations) and waiting times for appointments can be long in the public sector. Furthermore, the EHIC cannot be used if you visit a private health care provider.

Students can register with the student social security system in their country, the generic social security system, join the Caisse des Français à l'étranger (CFE) or take out international insurance from the first euro. With this type of solution, you are covered from the first euro spent and you benefit from other guarantees (repatriation assistance, civil liability insurance, etc.) and services (third-party payment, direct payment of hospitalization costs, etc.) that are very useful abroad.
