FEEDUC has put together a number of rankings of universities in Spain to give you an initial idea of which university to choose for your higher education in Spain.

But the best way to choose your university in Spain is to make your own ranking.

The first step is to choose your criteria. FEEDUC has identified 3 different criteria which are relatively objective and which can help you make an initial selection from all the Spanish universities available.

  • The price
  • Geographical location
  • Admission criteria

Spanish universities are fee-paying, whether public or private. But of course, private Spanish universities are more expensive than public ones. That's also why they're easier to get into.

The first thing you need to set up is your budget https://www.feeduc.eu/financer-etude-espagne/. Based on this budget, you'll be able to make an initial selection of universities. When studying abroad, it's also important to consider the cost of living. In Spain, the cost of living is relatively lower than in France.

By the time you've worked out what your budget is for studying in Spain, you'll have eliminated a number of options...or not, if you're on a tight budget.

What other criteria can I use to choose a university?

One of the points most often mentioned by students is the choice of the city where they are going to study. It's a criterion that helps to eliminate different options and narrow down the choices.

But don't limit yourself to the city. When choosing a university, be sure to check out the location of the campus on which the desired course is organized. Universities, both public and private, have different campuses, sometimes located far apart.

Furthermore, in the example of Madrid's private universities, very few have campuses in downtown Madrid. Some students' fears of studying in a big city are therefore unfounded. Indeed, universities such as Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio (UAX) https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universidad-alfonso-diez-el-sabio-uax/, Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universite-europea-de-madrid-uem/, Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV) https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universite-francisco-de-vitoria-ufv/ or Universidad Camilo José Cela ( UCJC ) https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universidad-camilo-jose-cela/ and CEU San Pablo https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universite-san-pablo-ceu/ have their campuses outside Madrid, sometimes an hour's bus ride from downtown Madrid. The campuses are located in residential areas well away from the frenetic activity of the center of the Spanish capital. These are exclusive, highly secure areas where students can study in ideal conditions.

For some students studying in Spain, the proximity of their accommodation to the campus is sometimes the number one criterion. If you're from a small village and you're looking for the same kind of life, you'll choose universities located in this environment. If, on the other hand, you want a complete change of scenery, you'll choose campuses closer to the city center. Or, quite simply, you'll choose to study at the UEV https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universite-europea-de-valencia-uev/ because it's an urban campus right in the heart of Valencia.

Be careful not to isolate yourself too much, especially in your first year! Being close to campus is great, but if you're on your own, it can quickly become a negative.

Find out what activities you like to do outside your studies. Are you looking for open spaces and nature? Then choose the Universidad Europea de Canarias (UEC) https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universite-europea-de-canarias-uec/!

Choose UEV's Valencia campus or their new Alicante campus https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universite-europea-de-valencia-uev-campus-alicante/. Or head to Salamanca, to the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca ( UPSA ) https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universidad-pontificia-de-salamanca-upsa/, whose campus is itself a magnificent historical monument!

Choose UEM or UAX near Madrid, or Florida https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universidad-la-florida-valencia/ near Valencia.

As you'd expect, the choice of location is no small matter!

Finally, the last objective criterion identified by FEEDUC when choosing a university in Spain is the admission process established by the university. How can you find out about the admission criteria for universities in Spain? FEEDUC explains the admission requirements, university by university and course by course. If the first two criteria lead you to a university where your chances of admission are low, have a plan B!

Your level of Spanish is obviously the first criterion that will help you determine which university you can study at.

You have taken the Spanish test on our website https://www.feeduc.eu/test-despagnol-pour-etudier-en-espagne/ and obtained an A2 level. Applying to a university that requires you to have a B2 level may not be advisable in the short term. On the other hand, it can help you put in place strategies to improve your Spanish https://www.feeduc.eu/apprendre-espagnol/ if this is the university you really want to study at in Spain.

Some universities also require you to travel to take the tests, as in the case of the UAX https://www.feeduc.eu/universite/universidad-alfonso-diez-el-sabio-uax/ for dental studies in Spain https://www.feeduc.eu/formation/etude-dentaire-espagne/. If you can't travel, this option is out of the question.

In terms of1st year grades, don't censor yourself! It's impossible to give you a minimum mark for admission. It varies from year to year, so if you're interested in a Spanish university, take your chances.

Price, location and university admissions criteria are therefore the first 3 ways to select one or two universities. If this work is done correctly, it won't be necessary to apply to more universities, although it is of course possible through us to apply to all the universities that interest you.

Then, of course, there are all the subjective criteria that come into play.

Here are just a few examples of the criteria we've listened to over 10 years of experience working with families and students who want to study in Spain:

  • I have an accomodation in Valence
  • I want the sea next door to me
  • Planes near me only go to Madrid
  • It's closer to France
  • I'm a top-level athlete in this sport
  • I've got family in this town
  • I already have friends at this university
  • I want to study French in Spain
  • I want to study English in Spain
  • My physiotherapist studied there and recommended it to me.
  • ...

And if, despite all these selection criteria, you still can't decide, the best way to make your choice is to visit the universities during our open days in Spain during the month of February.

The campuses are also open to the public, so you can always visit them.

For individual visits, please contact us by e-mail, as some universities do not have the capacity to welcome students on an individual basis.
